Purpose at SXSW 2016
March 21, 2016
The Purpose team had an exciting few days in Austin for SXSW 2016! Our CTO Josh Hendler and Here Now Social Media Strategist Renee Miller led a session called “Mapping the Movement for Climate Action.” Purpose and Here Now presented findings from our research project that mapped the current state of the climate movement to better understand the connections between public discussion, community actions, and big moments like Paris and the release of the SDGs to empower climate activists in shaping global policy. Attendees learned about using data to improve interventions and measure influence on complex social issues.
Additionally, we ran two participatory activations within our dedicated space at the SXgood Hub. Our “magnetic poetry” wall engaged participants in a creative campaigning game, prompting them to chose an issue they cared about and a tactic and celebrity influencer to help solve it. Options included things like minimum wage and maternity leave matched with people like Taylor Swift and The Obamas with tactics like Snapchat campaigns and Hackathons.
Our space also featured a live poll that asked attendees “What’s the most pressing issue in the 2016 election?” We received 400 responses and the issue that topped the list by a significant margin was climate change with 124 votes. It was followed by immigration with 50 votes, gun safety with 46 votes, and mental health with 38. Our Head of Creative, Hannah Kreiswirth, shared the poll results on stage during the closing remarks for the SXgood program.
SXgood thought the most pressing issue was climate change— what do you think? Take the poll here.
